GST basics
When do I need to register for GST?+
If your turnover hits $60,000 in a 12-month period (rolling, not financial year), IRD requires GST registration. Smoko works whether you're registered or not — it just adds the GST line to invoices once you tick the registered box in Settings.
What's the difference between 1, 2, and 6-monthly GST?+
1-monthly is for businesses turning over $24M+/yr (rare for tradies). 2-monthly is the most common — file a return every two months. 6-monthly is allowed for under-$500K turnover and means less paperwork but bigger lump-sum payments. Set yours in Settings → GST.
Do I claim GST on a receipt that doesn't show GST separately?+
If the supplier is GST-registered, the receipt is GST-inclusive even if not broken out. Smoko computes the 15% portion automatically. If the supplier isn't registered (under $60K turnover), you can't claim GST on their invoices.
What's GST 101A?+
It's IRD's name for the standard NZ GST return form. Smoko outputs the same boxes (5, 8, 11, 13, 15) that you'd type into myIR.

Do I need to connect my bank?+
No. Smoko never asks for your bank password. Snap a receipt or upload a CSV and you're sorted. Skipping bank-sync is what lets us charge a one-off price instead of a subscription.
Can I import existing data?+
Yes — CSV import for transactions, contacts. Email [email protected] if you're switching from Hnry, Solo, or Xero and we'll help you migrate.
Is there an iOS or Android app?+
Smoko is a Progressive Web App — it works on iPhone and Android browsers, and you can add to homescreen for a native-feel experience. Native apps are on the roadmap.

Is the lifetime price really forever?+
Yes. Pay $249 once, use forever. We commit to a minimum 12 months of service from your purchase date. Realistically, Smoko is built to outlast Hnry's pricing model.
